General Overview

The pioneering efforts of the Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory (HOL) www.harrisortholab.org have positively impacted the quality of life of many millions of patients through innovation and evidence-based medicine since its inception in 1969. The mission of the laboratory is to improve patient outcomes through materials science and clinical research with an emphasis on total hip and knee replacement surgery. The HOL is part of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
 

An eleven to thirteen-week Research Intern position with a stipend is available from June-August 2020. The internship will include a structured introduction into the design and execution of international, multicenter clinical studies focused on the long-term follow-up of patients with a total hip or knee replacement. Interns will also have the opportunity to gain clinical experience through interaction with the Orthopaedic Surgery Department, to contribute to relevant clinical research, and to conduct an independent research project. The intern will have access to a sophisticated data registry system that captures arthroplasty and orthopaedic trauma surgeries across all Partners’ Healthcare-affiliated hospitals. Partners’ Healthcare is the largest healthcare provider in Massachusetts. Upon successful completion of the internship, the intern may be considered for the full-time clinical study coordinator position that is planned for June 2021.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

• Analyze study participant x-rays
• Assist in quality control of current study data
• Monitor publications from academic journals and contribute to literature reviews
• Attend Grand Rounds and other presentations from the clinical research staff
• Perform other duties as assigned

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a rising senior on the pre-med track who has demonstrated strong academic performance (minimum 3.5 GPA is preferred). Prior research and/or clinical experience and completion of undergraduate coursework in statistics and computer science are all preferred. Preference will be given to a candidate planning to matriculate at medical school in 2023.
 

Robust written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills are all expected. Independence, self-motivation, and a willingness to learn new skills are also vital for succeeding in this position.
