The Harvard Varsity Club (HVC), with support from the Department of Harvard Athletics and Friends of Harvard Football, has established The Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Fund to provide support to the Abercrombie family and any future Harvard undergraduate student-athlete who incurs a severe or catastrophic injury while competing for the Crimson while enrolled in Harvard College.
The fund is named in honor of Ben Abercrombie, who suffered a serious cervical injury while making his Harvard football debut at the University of Rhode Island on September 16, 2017.
Gifts to The Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Fund can be made through the HVC by clicking here, or by calling 617.495.3535. Instructions for mailing checks are below. All gifts are 100% tax deductible.
“On behalf of the Harvard Varsity Club Board, we have made it possible for the Harvard Community and others to support Ben, his family, and any future undergraduate student-athlete facing a challenge of this nature,” commented Bob Glatz ’88, The Broadbent Family Executive Director of the Harvard Varsity Club.
A heralded recruit out of Hoover, Alabama, Ben had risen on the depth chart in the defensive backfield throughout preseason training camp. He was a two-sport star in football and baseball at Hoover High School, helping the Buccaneers win Alabama 7A State Championships in both sports (football in 2014 & 2016, baseball in 2017). Following his senior year on the gridiron he was selected to the All-State first team.
“Having the ability to support the Abercrombie Family in their time of need, makes me proud to be a part of the Harvard Community,” stated Tim Murphy, The Thomas Stephenson Family Head Coach for Harvard Football.

About the Harvard Varsity Club
The Harvard Varsity Club (HVC) was founded in 1886 under the mission of preserving the traditions, fostering the ideals, and advancing the interests of Harvard Athletics. As ‘Your team for life’, the HVC is committed to supporting both current and former Harvard student-athletes in the classroom, on the playing field, and during their time of need. The HVC established The Michael Vollmer ’90 Fund in June of 2016 to assist former Harvard student-athletes battling ALS and other neurological diseases, and in September of that year presented former Harvard football letterwinner Mike Ernst ’83 with the first grant from the fund.
