A Letter from Johanna N. Boynton '88
President, Harvard Varsity Club

Dear Varsity Club members, Harvard alumni, parents, and friends,

It is a sincere honor and privilege to serve as the newly elected President of the Harvard Varsity Club. I thank you for both your trust in me and your support of our mission: “To preserve the traditions, foster the ideals, and advance the interests of Harvard Athletics.”  My name is Johanna Neilson Boynton (many know me as Jojo) and I graduated from Harvard in 1988.  I played on the varsity women’s ice hockey team for four years, captaining the team my junior and senior years.  In addition, I played two seasons on the JV women’s lacrosse team, lived in Cabot House, and concentrated in Psychology.

Attending Harvard and enjoying four seasons as a varsity student-athlete were some of the most formative experiences of my life. I am eternally grateful to those who not only afforded me the opportunity, but also led me through that experience.

It is an incredibly exciting time to be involved with the Varsity Club and Harvard Athletics. As the College embarks on its search for a new Athletic Director, a process which will include a comprehensive study on the student-athlete experience, I am looking forward to a period of introspection, thoughtful dialogue, and reflection on the role that athletics plays in the lives of our young student-athletes, parents, and thousands of alumni. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to pay it forward by expanding the conversation about the important role of athletics in our Harvard experience -- both as students and alumni.

In addition, we will continue to offer more community building events to engage alumni across the country and improve our positive support system for Harvard’s student-athletes. I welcome your feedback and your thoughts on how we can achieve these goals and hope to meet many of you during my tenure.

If you are already an active, dues-paying member, THANK YOU for your support. If you are considering becoming a member, please join us -- and remember, HVC dues & donations are 100% tax deductible!

As the largest affinity group at Harvard we heartily believe in our saying that the HVC is 'Your Team for Life!'  We hope to see you at one of our many events during the year.

Go Crimson.
